*spoiler alert* The events of September 11, 2001 are included in this story, a device I did not agree with. Such a sensitive event, and so soon after its occurrence, does not make for entertaining romance. This is the book where the author began to rely more heavily on her main characters having "emotional meltdowns" in order to advance the plot.

Prologue
Salt Lake City, Utah
Christina Hardy does not actually live in Salt Lake City but just outside the area in a very nice home located in "one of the (snobby) rich canyon neighborhoods" (probably up Parley's in the Summit/Park City area). She has a posh, part-time job as a sales associate in a souvenir gift shop in one of the downtown malls (that would be either Crossroads or ZCMI Center both demolished in 2007 to make way for City Creek).
It is January and she just got home from work. While Christina admits to herself her life is far from perfect, she is certainly content: wonderful husband who married her in the temple, luxury home, three beautiful children and she loves her job which allows her to be home before the kids are out of school. Poor cellular phone service up the canyon is the only drawback, but that's Utah! Her boss at work also just offered her a promotion to store manager. Christina is tempted but will probably turn it down. Her life is practically perfect.
Or is it?
Christina enters her kitchen to find her husband, Keith, just sitting there, expectantly waiting for her. He came home extra early today on purpose so he could drop the BIG PLOT DEVICE. He's been cheating on her for months, decided this other woman is the love of his life and he's moving out so they can get a divorce and he can marry this other woman. Don't worry, he'll send her plenty of child support in return for visiting rights with his children. Details in the divorce papers to follow.
Christina hardly has time to pick her jaw up off the floor and start processing all this as Keith Hardy skips merrily out the door and out of Christy's life.
Chapter 1
Fast forward to December 23rd of this same year. Life has settled down, but Christy still has nightmares about her situation only to wake up to the reality that it's still true. Her husband left her and she's joined the ranks of single parenthood. We are told Christy has shoulder-length, medium brown hair and her job is only a short drive down the canyon on a freeway (unnamed) that takes her directly into the heart of the city and the downtown malls (If she does live in Summit County that would be I-80 to Foothill Blvd which turns into 400 south. So, yes, eventually she'll get there!).
Christy greets the people she oversees (She took that promotion after all, circumstances kinda demanded it!). Rodney is happily married with a wife and small child, the other is a young, single woman, Mazie, who prefers standing around gossiping, always managing to disappear when there's actual work to be done, like waiting on customers or stocking shelves. Christy's about ready to fire her.
While the radio plays background, upbeat Christmas music, Christy complains to Rodney about the latest local news item. The richest man in Salt Lake, Bruce Chandler, is sponsoring a charity game as a contest to encourage the Christmas spirit of kindness and giving. Christy thinks Bruce is a rich, snobby hypocrite who just wants attention. Mazie brags she used to go to the same LDS ward as Mr. Bruce Chandler which makes her practically related to royalty. Christy and Rodney roll their eyes.
We are introduced to Christy's three children that evening. Christy observes how well they've handled the divorce with quiet maturity and acceptance. Lucy is nine and a sweetheart, eager to please her mom in everything she does. Tim is ten and a good kid. Christy's oldest, Charlotte, is thirteen but not a brat. She's painting her toenails, chatting on the landline with her best friend. When Christy pops her head in to say hi, Charlotte is pleasant and agreeable. Christy wonders what she did to deserve such well adjusted kids.
Chapter 2
Today is Christmas Eve. The snowstorm during the commute home is bad. Another commercial for Bruce Chandler's holiday contest is on the radio before another cheesy Christmas song, reminding her that's she's practically all alone for the holidays, begins. Christy can't stand it and bursts into tears while driving. She's almost home when she sees a car on the side of the snowy road, emergency lights flashing. Up ahead, a man is trudging along, the obvious owner of the abandoned vehicle. Christy pulls over and offers the (very handsome) stranger a lift.
He thanks her for being a true Samaritan. Just like that holiday charity contest currently trending on the radio. Christy growls and he changes the subject, introducing himself as Cameron. He was on his way to his maiden Aunt Beatrice Hammond's house to spend Christmas when his car broke down. Turns out Christy knows this woman personally, Aunt Bea is her Relief Society president and her biggest supporter after her divorce. Cameron replies he's familiar with divorce too which for him happened after he served his mission to Texas (Christy served in Florida) and married in the temple. They had a son, but he died. And Christy thought she had problems.
Christy invites her guest in where he can finally call his aunt to come pick him up. Christy introduces him to the kids, busy packing for spending Christmas afternoon with Keith and his new wife. It's obvious they are very excited about the sleepover and second Christmas they'll be experiencing this year. They barely acknowledge Cameron.
Observing this, Cameron invites Christy to Christmas dinner at Aunt Bea's. The doorbell rings and it's a very stuffy looking chauffeur, here to collect, "Mr. Chandler." That's right folks! Christy won the Utah lottery. She stares incredulously at Cameron who sheepishly admits his full name is Bruce Cameron Chandler.
And he's richer than Midas.
Chapter 3
Settled in the guest bedroom at Aunt Bea's, Cameron can't sleep as visions of Christina Hardy dance in his head. What a woman! Beatrice told him all about her situation, struggling to stay strong for her children while she was falling apart inside and Bea was the only person who knew.
Next morning, Bea suggests her nephew go pick up Christy, after calling her first to make sure it's all right. Christy agrees to be ready when he arrives.
He's a little late but Christy lets it slide, especially since he came bearing gifts, a large Hickory Farms gift basket.
In the car, they have a nice chat about the proper attitude everyone should have about money. Both are happy to learn they share the philosophy that having money sufficient for one's needs to support a spouse and children is all that really matters. It is the love of money that is the root of all evil. (Cameron's obviously been talking to Michael Hamilton!)
Aunt Bea (who we are told is in her sixties) welcomes Christy to her home. Other guests include extended family, friends and widows Christy recognizes from the ward who are already gathered in the living room where a tasty buffet lunch has been set out. Christy and Cameron grab plates and dig in. The party is entirely made up of childless adults. Afterward, everyone plays some games before retiring for naps. Cameron and Christy are also the youngest people there. Since they aren't tired, they sit up and talk. Christy learns Cameron has only one sister, inactive, living in Brooklyn, New York with her boyfriend. Cameron has always gone by his middle name. His father was Bruce and they were very close, until he died last year. Cameron makes a cute joke about having an alter ego who wears a mask, fights crime and keeps his cool car hidden in a secret cave.
Christy laughs and admits her full name is Laurel Christina Hardy but, for obvious reasons (what WERE her parents thinking?) she's always gone by Christy. They share another hearty laugh.
Christy discovers she's tired and decides to take her hosts up on that offer to catch a good nap.
Chapter 4
The room is dark when Christy wakes. She hurries downstairs to find everyone ready to play bingo (Did she wake up in a nursing home?) and eat buffet leftovers for dinner while watching It's a Wonderful Life. Christy falls asleep during the movie with her head on Cameron's shoulder while everyone else is already planning their wedding for them. She wakes and remembers she needs to call and check up on her kids who report having the best time of their lives. Their dad and his second wife are spoiling them rotten with gifts and entertainment. Christy hangs up feeling like the world's biggest loser. Aunt Bea suggests, since there's nobody waiting for her at home, why not just spend the night here? (Cameron will sleep in a separate bedroom, of course!)
Next day, Christy goes with Cameron to get his car, which immediately starts. No trip to the mechanic required after all. They return to Aunt Bea's who just smirks; it is SO obvious Providence brought them together. Nobody's working till Monday (today is Saturday) and there's a movie Aunt Bea is just dying to see so they drive into the city. (Park City has movie theaters too, Anita.) The Gateway mall is never named but it's obvious that's the venue they go to because Temple Square is just down the street and that's where Bea suggests they walk next, to admire the Christmas lights.
While they walk, the family chauffeur pulls up to chat while parking their car. Christy looks up, noting the Chandler Corporation skyscraper they just happen to be standing under. No parking validation needed for them!
The lights and displays on the Square are as beautiful as always and since the Crossroads Mall food court is just across the street, they grab a bite before heading home. Christy and Cameron held hands during this entire "date" while Aunt Bea pretended not to notice. Christy and Cameron admit their growing friendship for each other and say goodbye. For now.
Chapter 5
Christy wakes up Sunday morning, alone, as her kids won't be home until later that night. She calls again to hear a repeat of what a GREAT time they're having and hangs up feeling very depressed but goes to church where Aunt Bea and Cameron ask if they can sit with her. Christy gives a silent scream of delight, even though Aunt Bea sits between them during worship service. Christy teaches primary but she invites them both to her home for Sunday dinner. Bea's important calling prevents her from coming; but Cameron can!
During the meal, Christy and Cameron have another nice talk about staying positive during difficult trials, like divorce. Christy repeats her story of how her husband dropped the bomb. Then it's Cameron's turn.
Cameron's wife turned out to be very different from the Molly Mormon he thought he was marrying. Her testimony wasn't as strong as she'd let on. They started drifting apart. Even having a child didn't magically turn her into a happy homemaker. Even though the car accident wasn't her fault, that's how their son died. His wife took it very hard and seemed to resent Cameron's ability to find closure through fasting, prayer and scripture study. One day he came home to find she'd packed her things and left him with divorce papers waiting on the kitchen table for him to sign. His dad, Bruce, helped him find forgiveness and peace but it wasn't easy. His father was a good man who firmly but lovingly made his two children get jobs and learn a healthy work ethic. Cameron is a little embarrassed to admit he was able to make extra money doing some modeling. Christy feels more frumpy than ever. Cameron assures her she's the most beautiful, amazing single mom he's ever met.
Chapter 6
Cameron tells Christy more detail about life after his divorce. He sold the house and took up permanent residence in his downtown office which has a small studio apartment because his own father was a workaholic. This allowed his other vice presidents and servants to run the corporation and do all his personal shopping for him so he wouldn't have to go out in public. He began taking extended trips to New York City and LA for business meetings.
Just then, the kids come in, along with Keith who isn't pleased to find his wife entertaining a male friend instead of pining away for him. He implies Christy is setting a poor moral example for their children and threatens to change the custody rights. Christy tells him to get lost. Keith leaves, Cameron applauds before making a graceful exit. Christina's kids tell her they approve of her new "friend."
Monday, Cameron can't focus on his work. He impulsively finds Christy's gift shop, buys one of their most expensive items, while Mazie drools all over him, and has it gift wrapped especially for...their boss! Rodney and Mazie are shocked. When Christy gets back from lunch, she is forced to reveal her connection to Mr. Chandler and that her feelings for him are quite the opposite now.
Chapter 7
Despite Christy's insistence that she and Cameron are not dating, she goes to lunch with him the following day where he gives her another gift, a CD (it's the soundtrack to a 1973 film that was so bad, Roger Ebert walked out on it!) they both love. Christy is very pleased, she's been wanting to add this to her collection. Birds of a feather...
Just before New Years, Cameron calls, catching Christy in a very depressed mood. She breaks down sobbing but Cameron is totally there for her. For the last time Christy, the divorce was not your fault. Christy is grateful for his verbal comfort and advice.
Chapter 8
Cameron phones again the following evening (he's in New York on business or he'd be there personally to take her in his arms for a big hug) to give Christy another pep talk. He declares she is now his best friend and he'll phone again tomorrow the minute his plane lands which he does, inviting Christy on another "meal date." She lets her employees close the shop and hurries off to meet him so they can further analyze "the breakdown of a temple marriage." Cameron gave her homework-read 2 Nephi 5 and make out a pro/con list about life after her divorce.
Christy stays up till 4am to complete her "assignments" and is amazed at Cameron's wisdom. For the first time, Christy seeks out Cameron at his office where his secretary, after confirming with her boss, lets her right in. Christy tells him about her epiphany: it is possible to find forgiveness after divorce and she has become a better person because of it, all thanks to him. Cameron is glad to hear it.
Chapter 9
To celebrate, Cameron takes her to lunch then offers to come over tonight with pizza so he can spend more time getting to know Christy's kids. They all play Monopoly and have a great time.
Back in Ch. 7, when Cameron came to pick up Christy for their lunch date, a woman with a camera entered the gift shop wanting to take some promotional photos for the mall. Christy agreed to let her take pictures of herself with Cameron posing as a customer. No harm in any of that, right?
Christy arrives for another day on the job to find Rodney and Mazie (who won't meet Christy's eye) holding a copy of a local magazine with an outrageous headline plastered across the pages: Unassuming Local Woman Lands Herself a Millionare as Grand Prize in Holiday Contest. The accompanying article is a greatly exaggerated account of Bruce Chandler and Christina Hardy's romantic relationship, fueled by his money. Christy immediately blames Cameron and storms into his office to slam the article down on his desk and chew him out. Cameron defends himself. This magazine got it all wrong, both local papers: The Deseret News and The Salt Lake Tribune already ran articles about the result of his contest. There was no grand prize winner, he gave all the winnings to charity.
Not wanting to admit she might have overreacted, maybe just a bit, Christy turns and leaves, hiding in her own office for the remainder of the day. Cameron calls later that night but they argue and the issue is not resolved. Christy is convinced Cameron is selling out.
Chapter 10
A few days pass. Christy arrives at work one morning where Rodney takes her aside to let her know he overheard Mazie having a phone conversation that was very disturbing. She was thanking someone for publishing the article and the resulting money she received for her tip. Mazie all but admitted her direct involvement in libel! Christy wastes no time calling Mazie into her office to inform her she's fired.
Keith also read the article. He asks Christy to meet him in the lobby of the nearby Joseph Smith Memorial Building (originally the Hotel Utah) offering to take her back; especially if she just won a million dollars. What a hypocrite. Christy sees right through his little ploy and tells him to go recommit himself to his new wife. He made his bed.
Cameron is waiting to high five her when she exits the lobby. Christy is ready to be friends again. Cameron is glad. Christy promises to call him but it's more difficult than she thought. He's doesn't answer his cell phone for the rest of the day. She calls Aunt Bea who reminds Christy her nephew works one night a week in the temple. Christy gets in the car and drives to Salt Lake. It's been awhile since she last attended a session anyway.

She finds Cameron in the temple cafeteria. They sit and eat together where Christy clears up the misunderstanding; Mazie was the true guilty party. Both apologize. Christy tells him all the details about her meeting with Keith and his lame offer to take her back. Cameron glaces at the clock and realizes if they want to catch the next session, where he has responsibilities as a temple worker, they need to go now.
Christy has to force herself to pay attention during the entire (live) session. Cameron joins her in the celestial room and they talk for quite a while.
They meet for lunch the next day. Cameron is late, as usual, an annoying habit that Christy finally calls him out on. Cameron is amazed, he had no idea he had a fault with punctuality. He asks his secretary for a second opinion. She reminds him she gave him a watch last Christmas for a reason. Oh.
Chapter 12
Weeks pass and it's February. With Valentine's Day approaching, Cameron surprises Christy in her office to ask if he can take her out tomorrow for the holiday. Just as friends, of course. He brings roses to sweeten the deal. Not that it needs any sweetening! Christy's no fool, she accepts and even buys a new dress and allows daughter Charlotte to fix her hair before her "date" arrives to pick her up (and he's on time for once!).
The Roof is one of the most expensive restaurants in Salt Lake. After their fine dining experience, they decide to walk the grounds outside. Cameron tells Christy how, just before they met, he was going through one of the darkest, most depressing Christmases of his life. His father had just died leaving him all alone for the holidays. Getting himself out of bed to go to work or attend church just wasn't worth it anymore. He was contemplating suicide when his car broke down Christmas Eve. That's when an angel saved him.
Looking intently into her eyes, Cameron suggests maybe they should just get married.
Christy reminds him they haven't even officially kissed yet. Cameron rectifies that little detail. Both are left breathless by it. Yeah, they better get married. Soon. They decide to elope. They'll only tell the kids and Aunt Bea. Get married for time only in the Salt Lake Temple, then, after their temple sealing cancellations are approved, they can go back and do it proper.
(Is getting married for time only in the temple still possible? A quick Google found this internet discussion board. Sorry Christy but it looks like you have to be a widow, although with bishop and stake president approval you could but with everyone opting for civil ceremonies, marrying for time only in the temple is not really done anymore.)

After dropping Christy off, Cameron decides to impose on Aunt Bea and spend the night giving him the opportunity to share his big news. Aunt Bea doesn't mind at all, is delighted to give her blessing on the engagement and help plan this spontaneous wedding by taking Christy shopping to buy a white dress. Cameron is like a kid on Christmas Eve. He can't wait to be a father to Christy's children and share every aspect of life with this new family he's helping to create.
Christy can hardly sleep either, her nightmare has just been replaced by a beautiful dream where she'll never be alone again (and never have to work again to support her family). The date of the wedding has been set for February 28th.
The day before the wedding, they sit the kids down and tell them. (Wow, very smart.) All three are understandably apprehensive and quiet, especially Charlotte. After seeing them off to bed, Christy returns and, with tear filled eyes, expresses her concern that they're not jumping up and down with enthusiasm. (Well, what'd you expect, Christy? You're bringing another adult into the house. Their lives will never be the same again.) Cameron reassures her he'll do everything he can to win their trust, just give it time.
Next day, Christy and Cameron go alone to the temple, kneel across an alter and are married for time only. They pose outside as a wedding photographer takes a picture. They eat lunch, just the two of them, in the JSM building.
An unusual wedding, but let the honeymoon begin!

The day before the wedding, they sit the kids down and tell them. (Wow, very smart.) All three are understandably apprehensive and quiet, especially Charlotte. After seeing them off to bed, Christy returns and, with tear filled eyes, expresses her concern that they're not jumping up and down with enthusiasm. (Well, what'd you expect, Christy? You're bringing another adult into the house. Their lives will never be the same again.) Cameron reassures her he'll do everything he can to win their trust, just give it time.
Next day, Christy and Cameron go alone to the temple, kneel across an alter and are married for time only. They pose outside as a wedding photographer takes a picture. They eat lunch, just the two of them, in the JSM building.
An unusual wedding, but let the honeymoon begin!
Chapter 14
They spend one night in Las Vegas then continue on to the San Diego area where Christy's parents live. Keith's family is also from this area and the two families have always been close which is one big reason they got married. Christy's parents are just a little taken aback when she arrives with Cameron. There's some heated discussion about such a hasty second marriage but, in the end, Christy's parents realize this relationship was ordained by heaven.
Another stopover in Vegas to break up the drive back to Salt Lake where the kids are eager to welcome them back. They take them out to dinner to celebrate their new family. Next morning, Christy goes into work to inform Rodney today is her last day. Rodney is just as surprised as everyone else learning about her new life situation and the reason for her spontaneous trip. Christina Chandler informs him she's turning over management of the store to him.
Keith calls later that day. News travels fast. He's not happy but there's not much he can do about it except threaten to withhold child support. Christy warns him if he reneges on his responsibilities to the children he helped create, she'll see him in court. He agrees and they hang up.
Chapter 15
Weeks pass. Christy observes Cameron isn't used to having kids around all the time and it takes some adjusting on everyone's part as they all learn how to live together. Charlotte gets rebellious and contradictory. They take a fun trip to Southern California (don't worry, they can afford it!) over the summer which helps and when school starts in the fall, Cameron tags along to help them pick out new clothes and school supplies. Christy is happy to learn she's pregnant. They tell the kids that night and Cameron shows them an old album with photos of his deceased son. Tim and Charlotte are intrigued, both by the story and that when Christy and Cameron are sealed together, they will have an eternal little brother.
A few days later, they learn both temple sealing cancellations have been approved and they are free to plan the REAL wedding. Friday, September 14, 2001 would be a good date. They call the Salt Lake Temple and reserve a room. All their family and friends, including Aunt Bea, promise to be there.
But first, Cameron needs to take a quick trip back East to visit a friend in Boston, Barry, who needs some financial advice. Another good friend and vice president of the Chandler Corporation, Dean, (who is NOT a member of the church but happily married to Beth his whole life) is also flying out to New York City for an important meeting in the World Trade Center Towers on Tuesday. Cameron plans to catch the Tuesday United airlines flight from Boston to LA, where he has another quick business meeting, then he'll fly home, just in time for the temple sealing.
Christy can't shake a feeling of foreboding, that something dreadful is going to happen that might affect the wedding. (Gee, ya think?)
Tuesday morning, September 11, 2001, Christy gets all her kids out the door to school but Charlotte calls and Christy has to leave the house to bring her the forgotten item. On the drive back, Christy changes radio stations and can't believe what she's hearing. Once inside, she turns on the television where she stays, sobbing and reacting for the rest of the day. Bea comes over to share her grief. No word from Cameron, except a message on the machine letting Christy know he was about to board his flight and he can't wait to see her. Christy and Bea are understandably freaking out over the fact Cameron is most likely DEAD.
Cameron hangs up the phone and gets in line with the other passengers. All at once, a feeling hits him. Don't get on this flight! Cameron listens and obeys. He takes a cab back to Barry's home where he is smothered in a big hug of relief. What's going on? Barry shows him the TV.
Cameron desperately tries to call Christy but all the lines are jammed. All planes are grounded. Rental car agencies are making a fortune. He must get home! Barry and his wife just happen to have an old six-seater Chevy Astro van they've been trying to sell. It runs great and they'll sell it to Cameron for practically nothing if he wants to drive it to Utah. It even has a CD player and they'll throw in a road atlas for free. (How did we ever survive without Google maps and GPS?)
Chapter 16
Just before he leaves, Cameron remembers e-mail and quickly types a message on Barry's computer letting Christy know he's okay and alive. Back in Utah, Christy and Bea are both weeping over the images on the screen when Christy feels prompted to check her inbox, (after her dial-up finally connects!) and she and Bea fall into each other's arms, sobbing with relief.
Instead of hitting the freeway west, Cameron goes back to the airport and begins rounding up desperate passengers so he'll have some company on the long drive to Utah.
Gary is a twentysomething on his way to Denver. Tom is a middle aged man anxious to get to Kansas City because his beloved wife is being admitted into the hospital for surgery and he was hoping to be there for her. Kaniesha is a young adult African American whom Cameron felt compelled to talk to because she looked so upset. She needs to get to Columbus, Ohio. She's in. Victor is headed to Indianapolis and Anne to St. Louis. The fare is free, Cameron's only requirements are that nobody smokes or swears and he gets to choose the music.

Sitting in front of the TV, Christy and Bea are passing each other tissues when the phone rings. Cameron finally got through! The women are glad to hear he's on his way home and has the perfect opportunity to do some missionary work. Christy promises to make phone calls and find out if Dean is okay and how his sister Sherry in Brooklyn is reacting to the events.
News reports are getting repetitive. They finally turn off the TV and Christy puts on the CD Cameron gave her last year and tries to relax. Bea makes some calls to check up on everyone in the ward, everyone is just as upset as they are. The kids get home from school and they all kneel together in prayer on behalf of America and all their loved ones involved in this horrible day.
In the car, all agree the news is getting old. Cameron is grateful Tom is driving as the shock of his life being spared finally hits him and he doubles over in his seat, sobbing. Everyone already knows his miracle story so nobody blames him for his emotional outburst and nobody objects when Cameron puts in a cheesy Neil Diamond CD and they News reports are getting repetitive. They finally turn off the TV and Christy puts on the CD Cameron gave her last year and tries to relax. Bea makes some calls to check up on everyone in the ward, everyone is just as upset as they are. The kids get home from school and they all kneel together in prayer on behalf of America and all their loved ones involved in this horrible day.
Chapter 17
Victor is divorced but maintains very close relationships with all of his grown children. Anne is a widow with grown children who works in marketing. She was in Boston on a business trip when her flight got cancelled. Gary was flying home when the attack happened and his plane was forced to land in Boston. He's been married for three years and has a baby boy waiting for him in Denver. Kanisha appears to be a single mom with a twelve-year old daughter. She was in Boston for her grandmother's funeral, who obviously meant very much to her. She's been the quietest one in the car since the trip began.
Back in Utah, Beth is very upset as she's had no word on her husband's whereabouts. It's been confirmed he was in the building when the attacks occurred. Their kids are with a neighbor and her mom is driving out from Reno to be with them. Christy offers to walk the kids home. Beth asks if she wouldn't mind leading them in prayer, since they aren't very religious people. Christy is happy to comply.
Later that night, with Bea asleep in a guest room and all the children tucked in their beds, sound asleep, the phone rings. It's Beth. Dean is okay! He got out safely but he was being treated for smoke inhalation and some injuries that occurred when the towers collapsed only a few blocks away from the triage areas and he was moved to a hospital where it was impossible to make any calls. He's flying home as soon as he can.
Cameron and his party reach Columbus, Ohio where Kanisha's sister is waiting at a gas station to pick her up. After a little prompting, Kanisha admits to Cameron death just won't seem to leave her alone. Her mom and son died in a car accident last year and now all this. She doubts she'll ever find peace. Cameron assures her she will, especially if she'll read this book.
On the road again, Christy calls Cameron's cell phone with the latest updates. Cameron can hardly hold back a sob when he learns about Dean. The other four passengers cheer and Christy laughs. Still no word on his sister but Christy will keep leaving them messages on their machine.
Chapter 18
Talk in the car turns to their country and the freedoms they enjoy which no act of terrorism will ever take away. Cameron mentions it was all foreordained by God in The Book of Mormon. His companions are intrigued by this "theory" and want to know more. Cameron gives them a brief summary of 1 Nephi and the restoration of the gospel of Christ thanks to a land that allowed freedom of religion.
They reach Indianapolis where it's Victor's turn to say goodbye. Next, Anne is dropped off in St. Louis. Both thank Cameron for the new insights on Mormonism he gave them during the trip.
The remaining two men, Gary and Tom, agree to finding a motel room for the night which Gary insists on paying for. They get a rollaway cot for Tom so there's no awkwardness about sharing beds. Sure, they could've afforded to get their own rooms, but they've got a comfortable friendship going here.
Besides, Cameron would've missed another chance to share his beliefs as he's reading the Book of Mormon before lights out when a scripture passage from Ether chapter 8 stops him cold. This is actually pretty insightful by the author as this chapter talks about secret combinations, including a prophecy about how they will affect us in the last days. The punch line is that "nations and countries" are terms not often used in the Book of Mormon, just lands and people and cities. Mormon writes that when we in the last days see these secret combinations come among us, attempting to get power and gain through murder and bloodshed, we should awake to our need to repent and turn to God or those slain will "cry from the dust" for vengeance.
Gary and Tom marvel at such insight from a book of scripture they've never heard of. They drop Tom off the next day in St. Louis. Cameron and Gary trade off driving on the final stretch home. Gary admits he can't help but question Cameron's belief in eternal marriage and that it can only happen under the proper authority. Aren't other churches just as valid? Not in God's eyes, Cameron explains.
Normally this would offend someone like Gary but, now that they're alone, he reveals for the first time, his beloved wife has cancer. The possibility that they could be together after death fills him with hope. No clergyman has been able to give him a clear answer on this subject. Gary is beginning to understand that Cameron's church is different. Gary wants a copy of the Book of Mormon and he'll probably contact the missionaries in Denver when he gets home.
Cameron is invited to spend the night at Gary's since he'll be driving solo after this. Cameron calls Christy to let her know. The kids are looking forward to his homecoming and the wedding has been rescheduled for two weeks from today.
Chapter 19
At long last, Cameron made it home! It only took three days to drive 2,400 miles but he made it. He and Christy share an emotional reunion. She is overjoyed to welcome him back.
After the excitement has passed, Christy sits Cameron down. She has some bad news. Christy finally got in touch with Jeff. The reason Cameron's sister hasn't been in touch with any of them while boyfriend, Jeff, hasn't returned any of their calls is because Sherry went into the city that morning to meet a friend for an early lunch. A friend who works in the World Trade Center. She never came back. Jeff reported he has been searching everywhere for her.
By now, it's pretty obvious what happened.
Cameron howls and buries his face in the couch cushions while Christy comforts him. Cameron is now the only living member of his immediate family left. The kids get home from school and greet Cameron with the same enthusiasm as Christy. He has little gifts for each of them, he always brings them something from his business trips. The kids are grateful and glad. Cameron calls Jeff who starts sobbing.
Next day he and Christy visit Dean and Beth. Dean says this unusual feeling came over him to leave the building so he did. Just in time. On the drive home, Cameron experiences a relapse of shock, grief and horror. How could this happen? Christy can only be there for him.
On Monday, in Cameron's office, Cameron and Dean reenact Bea and Christy's scene from last Tuesday, sitting down to have a good cry and passing each other tissues while having a long heart to heart talk. (Very manly, guys) Even his secretary is sniffling at her desk, still unable to get past the grief and horror of what occurred. Six days later and nobody's going shopping to boost the sagging economy. Come on guys, where's your patriotism?
Cameron calls Jeff the Boyfriend in Brooklyn to suggest he, Christy and Aunt Bea fly out there and they'll hold a memorial service for Sherry. Jeff likes the idea.
Chapter 20
No time for a romantic second honeymoon in the greatest city in the world for Christy and Cameron. Jeff picks them up at the airport and drives them straight to his apartment in Brooklyn. Nobody's in the mood to see all the sites in Manhattan. Cameron locates their closest LDS bishop to help conduct the service while Christy and Bea clean up the messy apartment and start some dinner for Jeff who is grateful for all they're doing. Cameron helps him go through Sherry's personals while the women continue their deep cleaning projects.
Many people attend the service, all with nice things to say about Sherry: what a good friend she was, her vivacious personality and infectious positive attitude. Jeff is also one of the speakers. Beautiful musical numbers are performed. Then it's Cameron's turn: not sure where these words are coming from, he finds himself giving comforting words and counsel that make everyone cry and touches the hearts of all as he bears his testimony on God's great plan of happiness for all his children. It's a beautiful service.
Two weeks later, Christy and Cameron are sealed in the Salt Lake temple with a reception held in the JSM. To Cameron's surprise and delight, Gary and his wife crash the party. After the introductions, Gary tells Cameron he and his wife, now cancer free at the moment, were glad for this excuse to come to Utah, tour temple square and talk to missionaries as they continue to investigate the church. Something good was able to be salvaged out of this dark cloud of terrorism. Gary will always be grateful for the circumstances that led them to meet. Cameron couldn't ask for anything more.
Cameron and Christy kiss and agree that being someone's rescuer is what life is all about and why we're all here.
